Green Golem, founded in December 2023, is the first and only modern Zionist literary magazine.
Zionism has always been a diverse movement with many branches. We use the Anti-Defamation League’s definition, which we believe to be both precise and broadly inclusive:
“Zionism is the movement for the self-determination and statehood for the Jewish people in their ancestral homeland, the land of Israel.”
After the brutal October 7th Hamas attacks, we were all devastated. But as writers and artists, we were further dispirited to see many favorite publications put out statements which either failed to outright condemn the attack, or outright supported it.
This experience gave us the idea to start a specifically Zionist literary magazine: one which values both the Jewish community and the State of Israel, and which affirms the rights of all nations to self-determination and a life free of terror.
We’re calling it Green Golem: The Zionist Literary Magazine. The golem, a stone creature from Jewish mythology, is a symbol of Jewish innovation and self-defense. The color green represents Israel’s farmers and kibbutzniks; Israel’s green energy advancements; and the green uniforms of the IDF, who protect Israel today.
