Where the Light Doesn’t Reach

“Where the Light Doesn’t Reach” is artwork by Efrat Baler-Moses (2023, acrylic on canvas, 36 x 48 x 3.5 inches).

This piece is part of a series directly responding to the Hamas terror attack in Israel on October 7, 2023. It tries to subliminally convey the impact, horror, tragedy, and terror we witnessed. The series centers on portraying mundane objects with concealed narratives, suggesting deeper, unsettling layers beneath seemingly ordinary facades. The intentionally disrupted nature of the artwork’s construction prompts contemplation of the delicate balance between tranquility and chaos, shedding light on the inherent fragility of the human experience.

“Where the Light Doesn’t Reach”: While the images resonate with broader themes like domestic abuse, homicide, and suicide, the focus remains on the deep pain left behind for the families of the victims. The series centrally depicts seemingly ordinary objects inviting viewers to explore deeper, potentially unsettling layers within the artworks.

  • This piece is significant to me because it depicts my reality. The imagery in its metaphoric symbolism reveals the literal. The dummy is both within the image and behind, both in the actual spatial context and outside it. It is art mimicking life mimicking art mimicking life – what could be is in actuality. Our fears are realised not merely in imaginary illusion but also in hidden truth. There is a sucker behind each tragedy…we all knew what they were planning and we did not much – they hate Israel and do not want it to exist…I guess it is impossible to surgically strike the death of an entire fucking population hey?
